What actually happens
Graduation at the Devil's Flight
Wendy Christensen goes to a Pennsylvania amusement park to celebrate graduation with her boyfriend Jason Wise, his best friend Kevin Fischer, Kevin's girlfriend Carrie Dreyer and some classmates. Just as they get on the Devil's Flight, a roller coaster, Wendy has a premonition that a chain reaction derails it and kills everyone aboard. She panics and talks Kevin, Ashley Freund, Ashlyn Halperin, Frankie Cheeks, Lewis Romero and the goth couple Ian McKinley and Erin Ulmer into getting off. She cannot get Jason and Carrie off, and the coaster derails with both of them still on it, just as she saw.

Death keeps a list and a tanning bed schedule
Weeks later Kevin tells Wendy about Alex Browning, a visionary who escaped the Flight 180 explosion with six others, and how Death hunted them in the order they were meant to die. The first victims here are Ashley and Ashlyn, who are burned alive in their tanning beds. This is the scene people dread, and it happens early in the movie, after the roller coaster crash. Wendy researches Death, finds the U.S. Route 23 pile-up that came a year after Flight 180, and decides she and Kevin can save the others by studying clues hidden in the photographs she took at the park. They miss on Frankie, who is trapped in Kevin's truck, where an engine fan slices his head. The next day a weight machine crushes Lewis's head at the gym. At a hardware store, Wendy saves Ian from falling stakes, but Death skips ahead to Erin, who lands on a nail gun that shoots into her head.
A tricentennial fair with no safety inspector
The photographs show that the next two people in line are Wendy's sister Julie and one of her friends, so Wendy and Kevin rush to the local tricentennial fair. Kevin pulls Julie away from a harrow that would have impaled her, but a flagpole flies through the air and impales Julie's friend Perry Malinowski. Wendy then saves Kevin from an exploding propane canister, and a grief-stricken Ian confronts the three of them and blames Wendy for Erin's death. A cart of fireworks blasts toward them and they barely avoid it, but it hits a cherry picker that collapses onto Ian and cuts him in half. Five months later, Wendy is on a subway with her roommate Laura and a friend named Sean and notices more omens. Julie and Kevin turn out to be on the same train, and Wendy has another premonition that it will crash.
The ending, explained
Jason and Carrie are the first to die, on the roller coaster. Of the people Wendy pulled off the ride, Ashley, Ashlyn, Frankie, Lewis, Erin and Ian all die, along with Julie's friend Perry. Five months later, Wendy, Kevin and Julie are on a subway train, and Wendy gets a new premonition that the train will crash and kill everyone aboard. The remaining survivors try to stop it, and the movie ends as the train seems to crash off screen.
