What actually happens
A premonition with a boarding pass
Alex Browning boards a flight to Paris with his senior class. Before take-off he has a vision that the plane explodes in mid-air and kills everyone on it. When events from the vision start happening for real, he panics so badly that he gets into a fight with a classmate named Carter Horton, and both of them are thrown off the plane. His best friend Tod Waggner, Carter's girlfriend Terry Chaney, the teacher Valerie Lewton and the students Billy Hitchcock and Clear Rivers leave with them. Only Clear is willing to take Alex seriously. Then the plane explodes shortly after take-off, and the survivors get questioned by a pair of FBI agents named Weine and Schreck. Both agents are suspicious of Alex, which is reasonable, because he predicted a plane explosion.

The bus does not have a stop
After a memorial service, Tod slips on water from the toilet, falls into the bathtub, and a clothes line wraps around his neck. The authorities call it a suicide. Alex does not agree and sneaks into the funeral home to look at the body, and the mortician, William Bludworth, tells him that the survivors have thrown off Death's plan and that Death is now collecting the people who were supposed to be on the plane. Later Alex and Clear meet the others at a café, where they have a heated argument over what is going on. Terry gets fed up and leaves, and this is the scene to brace for: she steps into the street and a speeding bus hits her. It comes with no warning, and now you know when it is coming.
Death works from a list
Alex watches a news report about the explosion and works out that Death is taking the survivors in the same order they would have died on the plane. Alex arrives too late for Ms. Lewton, who is fatally injured by a chain of kitchen accidents before her house explodes. The rest of the group drive around town while Alex explains his theory. Carter does not buy it and stops his car on a train crossing to prove Alex wrong. Alex, Clear and Billy get out, but Carter stays trapped inside. Alex gets him out just before a train destroys the car, and a piece of the wreckage flies off and kills Billy. Alex decides that because he stepped in for Carter, Death skipped ahead to the next person on the list.
Paris, finally
The next day, in a cabin, Alex realizes he got the order wrong because he swapped seats with two classmates before take-off. That makes Clear the next victim. He races to her house while the two FBI agents chase him, and finds her trapped in her car with loose electrical cables sparking next to a gasoline leak. Alex grabs the cable so Clear can get out before the car explodes. Six months later, Alex, Clear and Carter finally take the trip to Paris to celebrate being alive. While they talk about it, Alex works out that saving Clear made Death skip her and move on to him. A bus collision throws a parking sign toward a neon sign, which starts to fall at Alex.
The ending, explained
Carter pushes Alex out of the way just as the neon sign falls, so Alex is not hit at first. The sign swings back toward him, though, and the film cuts straight to the credits before it lands. Before that, Tod, Terry, Ms. Lewton and Billy have all died, and Clear and Carter are still alive when the film ends.
The post-credits ruling
There is no post-credits scene. You can leave when the credits start.
✓ Spoiled safelyDog status: No dog dies, and the one in danger from live cables runs away in time.
