What actually happens
An airport full of the undead and no departures
Eight years after a zombie apocalypse, R wanders an airport that is now crowded with the undead. He can't remember his name, only that it started with R, and his best friend is another zombie called M. They talk in grunts, moans and the occasional almost-word. R has no heartbeat and constantly wants to eat people, brains above all, because eating a brain lets him experience the victim's memories, and that is the closest he gets to feeling alive. The movie treats all of this as a perfectly normal way to spend a Tuesday.
Reading this instead of watching it is the correct decision. Scaredy Cat makes that decision automatic, for free.
A bad first date, with a brain
R and a pack of zombies go hunting and run into Julie Grigio and her friends, who came from a walled human enclave on her father's orders to find medical supplies. R takes one look at Julie and his heart beats for the first time. Then Julie's boyfriend, Perry, shoots R in the chest. R then kills Perry and eats his brain once Julie is distracted, and Perry's memories make R like her even more. That is the scene to know about, and it happens early, so you are done with it before the story really starts. R then smears zombie blood on Julie's face to hide her scent, rescues her from the pack, and takes her to the airplane where he lives.
Couples therapy over an LP collection
Julie is terrified at first, but she begins to trust R after he saves her during a failed escape and finds her food. He asks her to stay for a few days until it is safe to leave, and they pass the time with LP records and games. R's heart starts beating and his vocabulary grows. When Julie gets restless and tries to leave, zombies swarm her, including a confused M, and R decides to take her home. On the way he admits that he killed Perry, and Julie walks away from him. R heads back to the airport, where he finds that M and some other zombies are starting to come back to life too. That puts them on the menu for the Boneys, a skeletal kind of zombie that gave up its flesh and its humanity and goes after anything with a pulse. R and M bring a group of zombies to the human enclave, and R slips in over the wall.
A colonel who shoots first and listens never
Inside the enclave, R tracks down Julie and also meets Nora, her friend, who is startled to find a zombie inside the wall and sees that he is becoming more human. When R tells them the other zombies are coming back to life too, the three go to Julie's father, Colonel Grigio, who leads the survivors. He dismisses the idea and threatens to kill R until Nora points a gun at him. Julie and R flee to a baseball stadium to meet R's group, and the Boneys arrive there too. M and his zombies hold the Boneys off while Julie and R run, and they end up trapped.
The ending, explained
The only way out is a jump into a pool far below, and R lands underneath Julie to cushion her fall. She hauls him up from the bottom, and they kiss. Then Colonel Grigio turns up and, with no warning at all, shoots R in the shoulder. While Julie argues that R has changed, she sees that he is bleeding, which means he has fully revived and is human again. The humans and zombies fight the Boneys together and kill most of them, and the rest die of starvation. The remaining zombies gradually come back to life and join human society. Later, R and Julie watch the wall around the city being demolished, and the apocalypse is over.
