What actually happens
Everyone in Burkittsville has a story, and none of them end well
Heather, Mike and Josh head to Burkittsville, Maryland, in October 1994 to film a documentary about the Blair Witch, and they interview locals about the legend. They hear about Rustin Parr, a hermit from the depths of the forest who abducted seven children in 1941. He killed them in his basement in pairs, with one child made to stand in a corner facing the wall. A fisherman warns the students that the forest is cursed and tells them about Robin Weaver, a child who went missing in 1888. She returned after three days and described an old woman who floated just above it. A search party then found the bodies of five missing men, tied up and displayed on Coffin Rock, but the bodies were gone when others returned to bury them.
The students camp near Coffin Rock, and the next day they find a graveyard with seven small piles of stones, one of which Josh knocks over by accident. That night they hear sticks snapping. They try to walk back to the car the following day, cannot find it before dark, and hear the sticks again. In the morning there are three new piles of stones beside their tent. Heather's map is missing, and Mike admits he kicked it into a creek, which starts a fight. They head south using Heather's compass and find stick figures hanging from trees. That night there are noises, including children laughing, and the tent gets shaken by something. The students bolt outside and spend the rest of the night hiding in the trees.
Josh is gone, and so is his shirt
The students return to the tent and find their things have been searched and Josh's equipment is covered in slime. They get back to a river they had already crossed, which tells them they have been going in circles. Josh disappears the next morning, and Heather and Mike cannot find him. That night they hear him screaming but cannot locate him, and they decide the Blair Witch is imitating him to lure them out. Heather finds a bundle of twigs tied with cloth from Josh's shirt. Inside is a bloody scrap of the shirt with teeth and hair in it. She keeps this from Mike. That night she records an apology to all three mothers and says something evil is haunting them.
A basement and a very familiar corner
Later they hear Josh calling for help and follow his voice to an abandoned house, where children's bloody handprints cover some of the walls. They search the attic and find nothing, and the voice seems to come from everywhere. Mike runs downstairs ahead of Heather and into the basement. This is the scene people dread most, and it is the end of the movie. Something unseen strikes Mike, who drops his camera and goes quiet. Heather comes into the basement hysterical and finds Mike in a corner with his face to the wall, and he does not react when she yells his name. The unseen force then strikes Heather, who drops her camera and goes silent too. The picture cuts to black.
The ending, explained
Josh disappears from camp one morning, and Heather and Mike never find him. Heather finds a bloody scrap of his shirt with teeth and hair wrapped in it, and later they follow his voice to a ruined house. Mike runs into the basement and is struck by something unseen, then stands silent in a corner with his face to the wall. Heather follows, sees him, and is struck as well, and the camera cuts to black. The film shows nothing after that.
