What actually happens
The crucifix in the prayer closet takes it personally
Carrie White, a shy and unpopular girl at Ewen High School in Maine, gets her first period in the gym showers. She thinks she is bleeding to death and runs out calling for help, and the other girls respond by pelting her with tampons and pads. Chris Hargensen films it and posts the video online. Miss Desjardin, the gym teacher, comforts Carrie and sends her home to her mother, Margaret, a religious fanatic who considers menstruation a sin. Margaret orders Carrie to stop showering with the other girls. Carrie refuses, so Margaret smacks her on the forehead with a Bible and shuts her in the prayer closet. While Carrie screams to be let out, the door cracks and the crucifix inside begins to bleed. Carrie then notices more telekinetic abilities and starts researching how to control them.
Reading this instead of watching it is the correct decision. Scaredy Cat makes that decision automatic, for free.
Tommy Ross is lent out as an apology
Miss Desjardin gives the girls who bullied Carrie a choice between a week of detention and suspension, which would keep them from the prom. Everyone picks detention except Chris, who is suspended. Sue Snell regrets what she did and sends her boyfriend, Tommy Ross, to invite Carrie to the prom as a way of making amends. Carrie says yes and sews her own dress. Margaret decides the powers come from the Devil, and on prom night she tries to keep Carrie home until Carrie uses her telekinesis to lock her in the closet. Meanwhile Chris and her boyfriend, Billy Nolan, have a plan, and their friends Tina and Jackie slip fake ballots into the box naming Carrie and Tommy the prom queen and king. Sue spots a bucket of blood hanging over Carrie, but Miss Desjardin locks her out of the gym.
The bucket arrives on schedule
The scene people dread is the prom, which comes late in the movie. Chris tips the blood over both Carrie and Tommy, and then Tina plays the shower video on the big screens while the crowd laughs. When Miss Desjardin tries to help, Carrie pushes her away with her powers. The bucket drops on Tommy's head and kills him. Carrie then turns her telekinesis on the room and kills many students and staff members, though Miss Desjardin is spared. A wire touches leaking water, a fire starts, and the school burns down while Carrie walks away. Chris and Billy try to drive off, but Carrie crashes their car and Billy dies. Chris tries to run Carrie over, and Carrie answers by hurling the car into a gas station, which ends Chris.
The bath goes better than the next scene
Carrie goes home and takes a bath, then tearfully tells Margaret about the prank. Margaret answers by explaining how Carrie was conceived, which she has always believed is a sin she is paying for. She stabs Carrie with a knife, convinced that she has to stop the Devil from taking Carrie over the way it once took her. Carrie fights back and kills Margaret with a number of sharp tools. She becomes hysterical, and stones rain down from the sky onto the house. The house then begins to come apart around her.
The ending, explained
Carrie kills Margaret and, in her hysteria, makes stones fall from the sky to crush the house. Sue arrives and Carrie lifts her into the air, then senses that Sue is pregnant. She protects her instead, throws Sue out of the house to safety, and the house caves in and sinks with Carrie inside, which seems to end her too. Afterward Sue testifies in court about the prom, then visits the graves of Carrie and Margaret and leaves white roses. As she walks away, the gravestone starts to break and an angry scream is heard, hinting Carrie may have survived. In the alternate ending, Sue goes into labor at the grave and Carrie's bloody hand grabs her arm in the hospital, and then Sue wakes up at home, where her mother tells her it was a nightmare.
The post-credits ruling
Nobody has confirmed either way whether Carrie has a scene after the credits. There is an alternate ending, in which Sue's labor turns out to be a nightmare.
β Spoiled safelyDog status: no dog dies, though a pig does.
