What actually happens
The prayer closet has a good reputation
Carrie White is a shy sixteen-year-old who is bullied by her classmates. When she gets her first period in the school showers, she panics, because nobody has ever explained it to her. The girls laugh and throw tampons and pads at her, and the gym teacher, Miss Collins, finally puts a stop to it. At home, her mother, Margaret, is abusive and religiously fanatical. She tells Carrie the period was caused by sin and locks her in a prayer closet to ask God for forgiveness. Back at school, Miss Collins punishes the girls who tormented Carrie with exercise detention and threatens to suspend them and cancel their prom tickets if they refuse. Chris Hargensen, her longtime bully, refuses and is banned from the prom.

A bucket of pigs' blood gets installed
Chris and her delinquent boyfriend, Billy Nolan, plan their revenge. They break into a farm, slaughter pigs, and drain the blood into a bucket, which they hide above the stage in the school gym. Meanwhile Carrie discovers that she can move things by thinking about it when she is upset. She identifies it as telekinesis and starts reading books about it. Sue Snell, a classmate who feels guilty about bullying Carrie, asks her popular boyfriend, Tommy Ross, to take Carrie to the prom. Carrie thinks it is a prank, but Tommy insists it is not, and she accepts. Margaret forbids her to go. Carrie defies her anyway, and Margaret sees her daughter's powers at work and calls her a witch corrupted by sin.
Prom queen, with a bucket
At the prom, Chris and Billy hide under the stage, and Carrie's classmate Norma and other conspirators rig the ballots so Carrie wins prom queen. As Carrie stands on stage with Tommy, finally feeling accepted, Sue figures out the plan and tries to stop it. Miss Collins sees Sue and assumes she is planning a prank, so she throws her out. Chris and Billy pour the pigs' blood on Carrie and sneak away. The empty bucket hits Tommy on the head and knocks him out. When Norma starts laughing, Carrie hallucinates that everyone is mocking her. This is the scene people dread, and it happens late in the movie, in the gym. Carrie seals the exits, and a fire hose injures several students and kills Norma. A backboard crushes Miss Collins, and Carrie electrocutes the principal and the English teacher, one of whom burns. The gym catches fire, and Carrie leaves everyone inside to die. On her way home, Chris tries to run her over, so Carrie rolls the car and sets off the gas tank, which kills Chris and Billy.
The ending, explained
At home, Carrie washes off the blood. Her mother, Margaret, tells her she was conceived when her husband was drunk, and admits she enjoyed it, and then plunges a kitchen knife into Carrie's back. Carrie sends knives flying across the room at Margaret, which kills her, and then she destroys the house and dies in it. Some time later, Sue Snell, the sole survivor of the prom, brings flowers to the burned ruins of the White house, where a For Sale sign has been vandalized with a message that Carrie burns in Hell. Then Carrie's bloody arm pushes up out of the rubble and grabs Sue. She screams and wakes up in her bed, where her mother is comforting her after a nightmare.
