What actually happens
A rotisserie chicken at midnight
Anita Lesnicki, called Needy, is a once insecure and studious teenager from Devil's Kettle, Minnesota. She is now a violent asylum inmate who tells the story as a flashback from solitary confinement. Needy has been best friends since childhood with Jennifer Check, a popular and beautiful color guard flag spinner. Jennifer often mistreats Needy, who admires her too much to push back. One night Jennifer takes Needy to a dive bar for a concert by the indie band Low Shoulder. A fire breaks out and kills several people. Jennifer goes off with the band despite Needy's warning. Later that evening she turns up in Needy's kitchen covered in blood and tries to eat a rotisserie chicken. She vomits black fluid, nearly bites Needy's neck, and then backs off and leaves.

Two dates that end in the woods and an abandoned house
The next morning Jennifer seems fine and brushes off Needy's worries. She also seems indifferent to the fire. She flirts with Jonas, the captain of the football team, and leads him into the woods. There she disembowels him and eats him. This is the scene to brace for, and it happens early. Meanwhile Low Shoulder becomes popular because of a false rumor that they were heroes in the fire. A month later Jennifer is sick and sluggish. She says yes to a date with Colin, a school emo kid, and invites him to an abandoned house, where she brutally kills and devours him. Needy senses that something terrible has happened and has a vision of a demonic Jennifer. On the way home a Jennifer drenched in blood is standing in the road. Back in her bed she finds Jennifer, now revitalized, who kisses her until Needy comes to her senses.
The band sacrifices a virgin who isn't one
Jennifer tells Needy what happened after the fire. Low Shoulder took her into the woods and offered her to Satan as a virgin sacrifice in exchange for fame and fortune. The sacrifice worked, but Jennifer was not a virgin after all, so the possession stuck. She became hungry, and her first victim was Ahmet, an exchange student everyone thought had died in the fire. She planned to eat Needy first but didn't have the heart to hurt her best friend, which is why she left the kitchen. Each time she eats someone, she can survive any injury without pain and heals right away.
A school library with an occult section
Needy looks in the school library's occult section and decides that Jennifer is a succubus, which lives on human flesh and is only vulnerable when it is hungry and weak. Needy tells her boyfriend Chip, but he doesn't buy it, so she dumps him to protect him. On the way to the school dance, Jennifer stops Chip and claims Needy has been seeing Colin behind his back. She tries to seduce him, and he is not interested, so she brings him to an empty pool and starts feeding on him. Needy arrives, and while the two girls argue, Chip spears Jennifer in the stomach with a pool skimmer. Jennifer has eaten enough to survive, so she pulls it out and escapes while Chip dies.
The ending, explained
Needy breaks into Jennifer's bedroom, and the two of them fight. Jennifer bites Needy's shoulder, but she stops fighting back when Needy tears the best friend necklace off her neck. Needy drives a utility knife into her heart, which kills Jennifer and destroys the demon. Jennifer's mother walks in, sees Needy sitting on her daughter's body, and Needy is sent to an institution. The bite gives Needy some of Jennifer's supernatural powers. She breaks out of the facility, hunts down Low Shoulder, and kills the band.
