What actually happens
A streamer with a very specific ranking
Alice Ackerman is a camgirl on a site called FreeGirlsLive, where she goes by Lola_Lola and badly wants to reach number one. Her mother thinks she works in web development, and her younger brother Jordan pushes her to tell the truth. Two regular viewers, Barney and Arnold, chat with her in private messages. The scene people dread comes at the very start. One night, at the request of an anonymous user who later turns out to be Arnold, Alice appears to slit her own throat on stream, and then she wakes up and reveals it was a stunt. Barney tells her later that night that he is about to be nearby, and she agrees to meet him. While shopping for Jordan's birthday, she spots Arnold, and she angrily confronts him later, assuming he moved to be near her. He says he simply took a job nearby.
Reading this instead of watching it is the correct decision. Scaredy Cat makes that decision automatic, for free.
Somebody else is wearing her face
One morning Alice cannot log into her FreeGirlsLive account, although it is still live and streaming. Whoever is on the stream has her exact face and mannerisms. Alice assumes the site is replaying old shows, but customer service insists that is impossible. When she messages the channel, the Lola on screen answers her directly. The other camgirls agree the situation is strange but say they have nothing to do with it. Every attempt Alice makes to get into her account or open a new one fails. At Jordan's birthday party his friends find one of the fake Lola's streams and mock her, which lets Alice's mother learn the truth about her job. Alice, humiliated, panics and leaves.
The fake Lola has a better social life than the real one
That night the fake Lola stages her own suicide on stream by shooting herself in the mouth. Alice calls the police, who turn out to be dismissive and judgmental. When the fake Lola announces a joint show with another camgirl, BabyGirl, Alice tries and fails to contact Baby. While Alice is on her date with Barney, Lola starts a stream, and Barney assaults Alice, accusing her of lying about who she is to scam him. She gets away. Later she uses information from Barney to work out that Baby is really Hannah Darin, who died in a car accident six months earlier. Alice searches for other camgirls who might be doubles, and she notices that every one of them has Arnold as a top friend.
A vanity mirror and a plan
Alice finds Arnold at his motel and begs for help, and he says he loves her. She falls asleep and wakes to find him in a private session with Lola. Furious, she demands answers. Arnold admits he knows about the doubles but says he has not made them, and he does not know how they work. Alice talks to the fake Lola from his computer, and the double does not remark that they look identical, apparently unable to see what it is copying. Alice storms out. At home she arranges her vanity mirror, a camera and a television to make it look like there are several of her. She joins a private session with the fake Lola, who again does not recognize her, and suggests they go live together. The viewers assume it is a special effect. Alice proposes a game: each of them copies the other, the audience decides who did it better, and the winner gets to ask the loser for anything.
The ending, explained
Alice wins the imitation game by breaking her own nose, and the audience names her the winner. She makes Lola hand over the password, then deletes the account at the exact moment it hits number one. Some time later she opens a new account called EveBot, using a fake ID in the name of Emily Ramsay, and her mother helps with her makeup. In her first stream as Eve, she greets her viewers cheerfully.
The post-credits ruling
There is no post-credits scene. You can leave when the credits start.
β Spoiled safelyDog status: fine, and the cat is untouched.
