What actually happens
A very polite weekend upstate
The movie opens with a Black man walking a suburban street at night, talking on his phone. A car pulls up beside him, he tries to get away, and he is dragged into the car. Six months later, Chris Washington, a photographer, goes upstate for a weekend with his white girlfriend, Rose Armitage, to meet her family. Her father Dean is a neurosurgeon and her mother Missy is a psychiatrist. Chris has uncomfortable conversations with both of them. Rose's brother Jeremy arrives later, and Chris notices that the family's Black staff, Georgina and Walter, behave in an eerie way.
Reading this instead of watching it is the correct decision. Scaredy Cat makes that decision automatic, for free.
A spoon against a teacup
Missy offers Chris a hypnotherapy session to cure his smoking habit. She uses the sound of a spoon stirring a teacup, and while he is under, Chris describes how a driver left the scene after hitting his mother when he was eleven, and how he waited too long to call for help. Missy sends his mind into a dark void she calls the sunken place, where his body is briefly paralyzed. The next morning he has no urge to smoke. Then a crowd of rich white guests turns up for the family's yearly party and keeps making uncomfortable remarks to him. He meets Jim Hudson, a blind art dealer who likes his photography, and Logan King, a Black man who is married to a much older white woman and behaves just as oddly as Walter and Georgina. When Chris photographs Logan with the flash on, Logan lunges at him and tells him to get out. Dean explains this away as a seizure.
The armchair in the basement
Chris tells Rose he wants to go home, and she agrees. He texts his friend Rod Williams, a TSA officer, the picture he took of Logan, and Rod recognizes Logan as a man who went missing in Brooklyn. Chris finds photos of Rose with many Black partners, including Walter and Georgina, and tries to leave. Jeremy and Dean block the doors, Rose reveals she is in on it and keeps his keys, and Missy sends him back to the sunken place. This is the part people dread. Chris wakes strapped to an armchair in the basement and watches a video from Dean's father, Roman, explaining that the family moves the brains of rich white people into Black bodies. The host's own mind stays trapped in the sunken place. Jim is next in line for Chris's body, and he says he does not care about skin color, only the working eyes. The scene is the video and the conversation, and the operation starts afterward in another room. Rod goes to the police, who laugh at him.
Cotton in the ears
Dean starts the transplant, opening Jim's skull in another room. Jeremy arrives to collect Chris, expecting him to be hypnotized by a recording of the teacup. Chris has plugged his ears with stuffing from the armchair, so the trigger fails, and he hits Jeremy. He kills Dean, who has set the operating room on fire, and then Missy. Jeremy attacks again, and Chris kills him too. Chris tries to escape in Jeremy's Porsche but hits Georgina, who now carries the brain of Rose's grandmother Marianne. Chris thinks of his mother and guiltily puts her in the car, and she wakes up and attacks him, which causes a crash that kills her. Rose and Walter, who now has Roman's brain, arrive to recapture Chris. Chris uses the flash on his phone to free Walter from Roman's control.
The ending, explained
Walter, now free, takes Rose's rifle and shoots Rose, then shoots himself. Chris starts to strangle Rose, but she begs and says she loves him, and he lets go. A police car arrives and Rose calls for help, but it is Rod who steps out. He picks Chris up and drives away, leaving Rose bleeding on the road. Dean, Missy, Jeremy, Georgina, Walter and Rose are all dead.
