In 2013 in Fresno, a high school student named Laura Barns died by suicide after an anonymous user posted a video of her passed out at a party and it went viral. A year later, her former best friend Blaire is on a video call with her boyfriend Mitch, and the two are planning to sleep together on prom night. Their friends Jess, Ken and Adam join the call, and then an account named billie227 joins uninvited. Nothing the group tries gets rid of it. Blaire traces the account and finds it was Laura's, which the others refuse to believe. They decide a classmate named Val is playing a prank. Val is invited in, and embarrassing photos of her at a party then appear on Jess's page. Jess deletes them, but they reappear on Adam's account. Val gets a message nobody else can see, reports the harassment to emergency services, and storms out of the chat.

Tech support turns out to be the problem
The group gets a photo of the messages Laura once received from Val, in which Val told her to kill herself. Val returns to the chat, sits motionless next to a bottle of bleach, and collapses. Police arrive, and the friends listen in as officers decide she died by suicide. Then billie227 sends each friend a message showing it knows their secrets. Blaire's is a set of pictures proving she cheated on Mitch with Adam. Ken shares a program meant to remove the intruder, and Adam tries to call the police, but the operator who answers is the intruder again, and the intruder shows a camera view of Ken's room from the other side. This is the scene to brace for, and it comes in the middle of the movie. Ken goes to look at the camera, his feed drops out, and when it returns he is killing himself with a blender.
A drinking game with a death penalty
billie227 makes the four remaining friends play Never Have I Ever and says the loser will die. The game pulls out a pile of secrets: Jess told people Blaire had an eating disorder, Blaire crashed Jess's mother's car, Mitch kissed Laura and turned Adam in to the police for dealing, and Jess took $800 from Adam. A drunk Adam loses his temper and forces Blaire to admit she slept with him behind Mitch's back. Mitch answers by making Adam admit he drugged and assaulted a classmate. Blaire and Adam then get notes through their printers, and Blaire's says that showing it will kill Adam. Mitch threatens to leave unless she shows it, so she does, and Adam shoots himself. When Jess's feed goes dark, Blaire gets a stranger on a random chat site to send police to Jess's house. Jess's video then comes back, showing her dead from a curling iron, and the intruder makes a meme of it.
A countdown and a slideshow of old photos
The lights go out at Blaire's and Mitch's houses, and billie227 turns out to be Laura herself. She demands to know who uploaded the party video. Blaire says it was Mitch, and Mitch drives a hunting knife into his own eye. Laura starts a countdown, and Blaire pulls up photos from when they were friends and apologizes for drifting apart. Laura asks whether that is really how she remembers it. When the countdown reaches zero, Laura posts a longer version of the party video to Blaire's page, and it shows that Blaire was the one holding the camera. Strangers pile onto Blaire with angry comments about Laura's death.
The ending, explained
After the countdown, Laura posts the longer party video, and it shows Blaire filming it. Comments from strangers arrive within moments. Laura tells Blaire she wishes she could forgive her, then leaves the chat. Her bedroom door creaks, the laptop is slammed shut, and Laura's spirit goes after Blaire. The movie ends there without showing Blaire get away. By then Val, Ken, Adam, Jess and Mitch have all died.
