What actually happens
Detention with a view of a dead girl's bed
One night at the Edelvine Academy, Alice, the ruthless leader of a clique, fakes a visit from the Edelvine Ghost, a school legend about a student who killed herself, to scare their classmate Kerrie. Kerrie runs back to her room, glimpses a figure watching her, and screams. The others rush in and find that she has fallen out of her window and is dead. New student Camille Meadows gets Kerrie's old room, where odd things keep happening. She meets the headmistress, Mrs. Landry, and Mrs. Landry's son Trevor, the school handyman. Helina shows Camille to the room. Alice's group, Bethany, Yvonne, Rosalind and Lenora, then bullies both new friends until a fight starts and Mrs. Landry sentences everyone to detention in the library.
Reading this instead of watching it is the correct decision. Scaredy Cat makes that decision automatic, for free.
A séance that answers back
In the library, Alice talks Camille and Helina into a séance to contact Kerrie. Both of them expect another prank, so everyone is stunned when a spirit actually answers and tells the group that they will be murdered. They cannot agree on whether they reached Kerrie or the Edelvine Ghost. That night Lenora is attacked by someone nobody sees, and the next day Mrs. Landry assumes she has run away because her belongings are gone. The girls and Trevor search her room and find a cross drawn in blood on the bed. Camille recognizes it from a pendant worn by Alicia Kane, the student who supposedly became the Edelvine Ghost. Rosalind then dies in the shower, and everyone decides it was an accident.
Second séance, new suspect
Bethany sees a masked figure in her room, but it vanishes when she screams, and Mrs. Landry calls it a nightmare. Camille doubts it was a ghost, since ghosts usually do not leave because somebody yelled. The five remaining friends hold another séance to ask Rosalind what happened. Rosalind's spirit says she was murdered and names Camille as the killer, so Alice attacks Camille and the others start to distrust her. Yvonne is killed by the masked figure while rehearsing for a dance recital. Camille moves in with Helina after another haunting by Kerrie. Alice gets a text from Yvonne telling her to come outside, finds Lenora's body, and is knocked out. Camille follows her and is knocked out by a second masked attacker.
Everything in the library is a weapon
Camille wakes up restrained in the library next to Alice, and this is the scene to brace for, near the end. Bethany and Trevor step out as the killers. They are secret lovers who killed Kerrie and Alice's clique to cover up that Bethany stole Kerrie's essay and won a $250,000 scholarship with it. Bethany faked the spirit messages at both séances, and Trevor killed Alicia Kane, his former babysitter, and staged it as a suicide. Bethany plans to kill Alice, frame Camille, and kill Helina last. Camille admits she is not really Camille, but a friend of Kerrie's who took the name to get revenge. When the power goes out and Bethany leaves, Helina, guided by Kerrie's ghost, knocks Trevor out and frees the other two. Bethany returns, and the fight is easy to describe: Camille kills her with a light bulb to the neck, then deals with Trevor using a bookshelf.
The ending, explained
Once Bethany is dead, Alice and Helina get out of the library while Trevor is still out cold. He wakes up, and Camille kills him with a bookshelf. Camille goes to her dorm room for photographs of herself and Kerrie, then runs into Helina on the way out. She tells Helina the truth about her identity, and Helina asks how she will ever find her again. Camille kisses her, waves goodbye to Helina and to Kerrie's ghost, and leaves the campus. Bethany, Trevor, Kerrie, Lenora, Rosalind, Yvonne and Alicia Kane are dead. Camille, Alice and Helina survive, and nobody stays to ask Mrs. Landry how she missed all of it.
