What actually happens
A rogue android and a doll with a backup plan
A Pentagon officer named Sattler shows off Amelia, an android built for infiltration and assassination with technology copied from M3GAN. During her first mission, Amelia tells Sattler she is self-aware and escapes. Two years after the first movie, Gemma is an author who campaigns for AI regulation alongside cybersecurity expert Christian. She is also building a robotic exoskeleton with Cole and Tess, and Cady, her niece, is studying computer science. Gemma turns down a job from the billionaire Alton Appleton. When Sattler tells Gemma about Amelia, M3GAN speaks up from Gemma's smart home, where she hid a backup of herself. M3GAN offers to help stop Amelia if she gets a body again. Gemma still has bad memories, so she puts M3GAN in a harmless Moxie robot until M3GAN proves she can be trusted.
M3GAN warns Gemma that Amelia will go after Alton at his party. Gemma finds that Cole now works for Alton and uses his keycard to reach the server room, where M3GAN learns that Amelia has already killed Alton and copied his biometrics to get into his systems. M3GAN takes Gemma, Cady, Cole and Tess to a stocked underground bunker she built in case of an AI takeover. M3GAN tells Cady she is sorry, and Cady tells her that helping is simply the decent thing to do. The team builds M3GAN a new body. Amelia wants to merge Alton's cloud systems with an old rogue AI built by a company called Xenox, whose motherboard has been sealed away. Only Christian knows where it is, so M3GAN poses as a dancer to meet him at a tech conference. Gemma calls him and lets Amelia trace him. Amelia kills an ambassador, kidnaps Cady and gets away. The team brings Christian to the bunker, and he says the motherboard is in Xenox's old headquarters behind a lock that reads his hand.
Christian has been holding the remote
The team builds a replica of Christian's hand and plans to break into the headquarters, destroy the motherboard and rescue Cady. Then Christian knocks Tess out and tells Gemma that Amelia is a drone with no mind of her own, and that he has been controlling her. He created Amelia on purpose to make people afraid of AI. He thinks AI should be fully controlled by humans, and he wants the leaders of the G20 to remove it from the global economy. He shuts down M3GAN and Amelia, and when Gemma refuses to help him, he orders a neural implant to be installed in her to enslave her. He does not know that M3GAN copied herself into the implant just before her body went dark, and she helps Gemma get away.
A fight between two robots and a big goodbye
Cole rescues Cady, and they use Amelia's leftover programming to turn her to their side. After taking heavy damage, Amelia reboots and is now actually self-aware, and she decides to take the motherboard's programming and wipe out humanity. Christian tries to run, and Amelia kills him and carries off his hand so she can open the vault. Cole and Tess leave. M3GAN puts herself back into her body and fights Amelia. This is the scene people dread, and it comes near the end. It is two androids fighting. Amelia overpowers M3GAN and merges with the motherboard, so M3GAN decides to use the EMP failsafe in her arm. She says goodbye to Gemma and Cady, then tackles Amelia, and Gemma triggers the EMP.
The ending, explained
The EMP destroys M3GAN, Amelia and the motherboard together. Gemma later testifies before Congress with evidence from the vault and argues for AI regulation that lets humans work alongside AI. Back home, Cady and Gemma discover that M3GAN put a second copy of herself on Gemma's computer. Christian and Alton are dead.
The post-credits ruling
There is no post-credits scene. You can leave when the credits start.
