What actually happens
A football player with a temper problem
Cayden Richards is a college football player who loses his temper after a rival headbutts him, and answers with strength no one should have. Later, while making out with his girlfriend Lisa, he turns into a werewolf and hurts her. He wakes up covered in blood among the dismembered bodies of his parents and runs before the police arrive. He drifts around trying to keep the wolf under control until a man in a roadside bar named Wild Joe turns out to be a werewolf too. Joe explains that there are two types: purebreds, born werewolves from a handful of old families, and the bitten, who are more human and cannot pass it on to their children. Cayden has just found out that he was adopted, and Joe tells him he is a purebred and should go to Lupine Ridge to learn more.

A bar where nobody wants a new customer
Cayden arrives in Lupine Ridge and walks into a bar, where the locals look at him with open hostility. He is drawn to the owner, Angelina, who goes by Angel, but the locals drive him out and he ends up working as a farmhand for John Tollerman. After a while he goes into town one night, and a werewolf from his own bloodline warns him to get out because he is not safe. Soon after, Connor, the alpha who leads the patrons in Angel's bar, kills Cayden's cousin. This is the scene to brace for: Cayden and Angel see Connor's pack eat the body after the murder. It happens after Cayden has been in town for a while.
A family history nobody volunteered
John fills Cayden in on his birth mother, Lucinda, John's niece. According to John, Connor fell for her, and because the packs were already at odds, he forced himself on her. Only John and his wife knew she was pregnant, and Lucinda killed herself after Cayden was born. The peace between the packs now depends on Connor being allowed to mate with Angel, since he wants a son, and he does not know Cayden exists. Cayden and Angel have started seeing each other, and he wants to cancel the arrangement, but the town's werewolves are afraid of what the mountain wolves would do. He goes up the mountain and tells Connor who he is. Connor does not believe him and sets the pack on him. Cayden is stronger than any one of the bitten wolves but will not kill, so the pack overwhelms him, and he escapes by jumping off a cliff.
A plan with a lot of explosives
Cayden and John plan their move against the mountain pack, but Connor kidnaps Angel before they can act and prepares to mate with her. Cayden kills two members of the pack and leads the rest into a trap, and there he and John blow them all up with explosives. Cayden then beats Connor in a one-on-one fight, and Connor tells him that John's story was false. He and Lucinda were in love, and he made up the assault to protect her, because her father would have killed her over the relationship.
The ending, explained
Wild Joe turns up and reveals that he planned everything. He killed Cayden's adoptive parents and sent Cayden to Lupine Ridge so that he could get revenge on Connor over an old grievance. Joe kills Connor himself, and Cayden kills Joe. Cayden then chooses to go traveling with Angel, and he promises John that they will come back. John gives him a scroll of the purebred bloodlines so he can find other werewolves on the way.
