What actually happens
A very expensive block of ice
In the winter of 1982, the Norwegian research station Thule comes across an alien spacecraft in the Antarctic ice, with an alien body buried nearby. Dr. Sander Halvorson and his assistant Adam Finch recruit an American paleontologist named Kate Lloyd to look at it. She flies in with the pilots Sam Carter and Derek Jameson and the crewman Griggs, and they meet the station chief, Edvard Wolner, and his team, which includes Lars and Lars' dog. The body is brought into the station in a block of ice, and the team celebrates. Jameson then sees the Thing burst out of the ice. The team splits up to search for it and finds Lars' dog dead. The Thing pulls Henrik into itself and sprays blood on Olav, and the group kills it by setting fuel on fire under it. An autopsy shows the alien's cells were copying Henrik's cells, and Olav falls ill.

Check everyone's teeth
Carter, Jameson and Griggs take off in the helicopter to get Olav to a medical facility, but Griggs turns into a Thing and attacks Olav, and the helicopter crashes in the mountains. Back at the station, Kate finds dental fillings in a bloody shower and realizes the alien can absorb and imitate people but cannot copy inorganic material like fillings. Edvard wants to drive to the nearest base, while Juliette and Kate want to keep everyone from leaving. When Juliette goes with Kate to get the vehicle keys, Juliette transforms and tries to kill her. Kate escapes, the Juliette-Thing kills Karl, and Lars burns it with a flamethrower. The team decides to quarantine itself. That night Carter and Jameson walk back from the crash, and the team locks them away because nobody trusts them. Kate suggests checking everyone for metal fillings. Everyone passes except Sander, Edvard, Adam and Colin, who have no metal fillings.
The main room goes badly
Lars is taken while he is fetching Carter and Jameson for the test. Carter and Jameson force their way into the main building, shoot Peder dead and hit the tank of his flamethrower, and the blast knocks Edvard out. When Edvard is brought to the main room, he turns into the Thing, infects Jonas, kills Jameson, and takes in Adam to become a monster with two heads. This is the scene people dread most, and it happens near the end. Kate burns Jonas and Jameson before they finish changing, then she and Carter burn the Edvard and Adam creature, and the two go after Sander, who has been absorbed too.
Inside the spaceship
The Sander-Thing drives a snowcat to the spaceship, which suddenly switches on. The ship moves and separates Kate and Carter, and Kate falls inside while Carter goes through the main hatch. Kate meets the Sander-Thing in its monster form and kills it with a grenade, and the ship's engines stop. She then finds Carter and notices that his earring is missing. Carter reaches for the wrong ear, and Kate knows he is the Thing. She burns the Carter-Thing so it cannot escape. Kate takes a second snowcat and sets out for a Soviet base 50 miles away.
The ending, explained
The next morning, the Thule helicopter returns with its pilot, Matias. He finds what is left of the burned two-headed creature, and Colin's body in the radio room with slit wrists and a razor in his hand. Lars is still holed up in the main building, where Jameson and Carter jumped him. He points a gun at Matias and makes him show his teeth. Lars' dog, thought to be dead, runs out of the building. Lars realizes the dog is the creature and orders Matias to chase it in the helicopter. Kate is on her way to the Soviet base, and Sander, Edvard, Adam, Carter, Juliette, Griggs, Jonas and Jameson are all dead.
