What actually happens
Please knock again
Before anyone else arrives, Dollface, Pin-Up Girl and the Man in the Mask reach an isolated trailer park in Kalida, Ohio, and murder Sheryl and Marvin, an older couple. The following day, Cindy, who is their niece, turns up with her husband Mike and their children, eighteen-year-old Luke and sixteen-year-old Kinsey, for a family visit before Kinsey leaves for boarding school. An unmasked Dollface knocks at the door and asks for Tamara, and Cindy sends her away. She comes back and is turned away a second time. Kinsey and Luke find their uncle's body in another trailer, and Cindy and Kinsey discover their cell phones have been smashed, and then Dollface attacks. This is the scene people dread most, and it comes early: they hide in the bathroom, Cindy helps Kinsey climb out through the skylight, and Dollface breaks in and stabs Cindy to death.
Mike and Luke find a voicemail Cindy left for her uncle before the trip and realize the strangers have been waiting for them all along. They fight off the Man in the Mask, then find Cindy dead. While they search for Kinsey in the van, the Man in the Mask drops a cinder block on the windshield and crashes it. Mike is impaled on a wooden plank and hands Luke the gun, and then the Man in the Mask kills him with an ice pick. Kinsey runs into Pin-Up Girl, who stabs her in the thigh until Luke rescues her. He hides her under a porch and runs to the general store to call 911, but Pin-Up Girl cuts the line. Luke gets away to the swimming pool and overpowers her there. The Man in the Mask then stabs him in the back and leaves him to drown, and Kinsey pulls him out.
Two trucks and a gas leak
A deputy finds Kinsey, and Dollface kills him almost at once. Kinsey takes a shotgun from the deputy's patrol vehicle and shoots Dollface in the chest. She pulls off Dollface's mask and demands a reason, and Dollface answers, "Why not?" Kinsey shoots her in the head. The Man in the Mask rams the back of the police SUV with his truck, and both vehicles get stuck together. Kinsey notices that both gas tanks are leaking, so she sets the leak on fire and blows up both trucks.
The ending, explained
The Man in the Mask lives through the explosion and chases Kinsey while badly hurt, until he yanks a shard of glass out of his stomach and collapses. Kinsey waves down a truck on the road, but the driver speeds off when he sees the burned man creeping up behind her with an axe. She jumps into the truck bed, and the man climbs up after her. She swings a baseball bat she finds there at his head and knocks him off, and the camera stays on him lying in the road, lifeless. Some time later, Kinsey and Luke are in a hospital. She wakes to loud knocks and a turning doorknob, and she drops her cup of water.
