What actually happens
A railroad crossing and a pickup truck
Krug Stillo is a notorious killer on his way to a maximum security prison. When he asks the officers for a restroom break they say no, and when they stop at a railroad crossing his brother Francis and Krug's girlfriend Sadie slam a pickup truck into the transport. Both officers die, Krug is free, and the three of them disappear. Elsewhere, Mari is a competitive swimmer, and she and her parents, Dr. John Collingwood and his wife Emma, set off for the family lake house. Mari borrows the car, drives to town and spends time with her friend Paige, who works the register at a local store. The girls meet Justin, a teenager passing through town, and he invites them to his motel room to smoke marijuana. Then Justin's father Krug, his uncle Francis and his stepmother Sadie walk in.

A road trip with the wrong passengers
Krug is furious that Justin brought strangers back to the room. He shows Justin the newspaper with his and Sadie's photos on the front page, which explains how the two officers ended up dead. Krug decides it is too risky to let the girls leave, so the gang kidnaps Paige and Mari and drives off in the girls' car. Krug is looking for the highway when Mari talks him into the road that goes past her parents' lake house. Then she tries to throw herself out of the moving car. The fight that follows between everyone in the car ends when Krug drives into a tree and wrecks the vehicle.
The part everyone warns you about
Sadie and Francis beat Mari and Paige as the girls crawl out of the wreck. Paige hits Sadie in the stomach, and both girls get a chance to run. Krug catches Mari, while Paige runs through the woods, falls, injures her leg and shouts at a construction site where the machines are too loud for anyone to hear her. Sadie and Francis drag her back. Krug makes Justin touch Mari to prove he is a man, Paige insults Krug to make him stop, and Krug and Francis stab her. Mari has to watch Paige bleed out. Krug then pins Mari to the ground and rapes her, and he tears off her necklace and throws it away. It happens in the middle of the story, and it is the worst of it. Afterward Mari breaks away and swims across the lake, and Krug fires at her from behind while she swims.
The storm sends them to the wrong house
A storm pushes Krug, Francis, Sadie and Justin to the nearest house, which belongs to John and Emma. Justin spots a photo of Mari and understands whose parents these are. John offers the guest house for the night, and Justin leaves Mari's necklace on the kitchen counter as a warning. Mari, badly hurt, swims to shore and collapses on the porch. John and Emma find her and the necklace and work out who is sleeping in their guest house. While they look for the boat key, Francis walks in and sees Mari alive, and John and Emma kill him with a hammer. They go to the guest house next, where Justin hands John a gun. Sadie wakes up, John shoots her in the neck, and Krug escapes through a window into the main house. A fight spreads through the house, Emma shoots Sadie dead, and Justin is stabbed trying to help. Emma and John knock Krug unconscious.
The ending, explained
John, Emma, Mari and Justin leave in the boat for the hospital. John comes back to the cabin later, where Krug is paralyzed from the neck down. John puts Krug's head inside a microwave that he has rigged to run with the door open, then walks away while it heats. Krug's head explodes. By then Francis, Sadie and Paige are dead, and Krug is the last of the group. Mari is alive when the boat leaves. Justin, who warned the family with the necklace, is alive too.
