What actually happens
A tape that changes its mind
Bill Whitney shares a Beverly Hills, California mansion with his parents and his sister. He admits to his therapist, Dr. Cleveland, that he doesn't trust his wealthy relatives. Then David, his sister's ex-boyfriend, hands him a tape that was secretly recorded and sounds like Bill's family taking part in a murderous orgy. Bill hands the tape to Dr. Cleveland, and when it is played again, it is a recording of his sister's debutante party. Bill tries to meet David to get another copy and arrives to find an ambulance, police and David's wrecked van. A body goes into the ambulance, and Bill is kept from seeing the face. His suspicions have not been calmed by any of this.
Reading this instead of watching it is the correct decision. Scaredy Cat makes that decision automatic, for free.
A funeral where the guest of honor looks wrong
At a party hosted by his wealthy classmate Ted Ferguson, Bill hears that the first tape was genuine. Angry and confused, he leaves with Clarissa, a girl he has been admiring. The next day, he asks his parents and sister to explain themselves. Later, at David's funeral, Bill and Milo, a friend of his, notice that David's body may be a fake. Bill now has a growing list of bodies he cannot check.
A rival with a cut throat shows up at school
Martin, who is running against Bill for school president, gets in touch with him. When they meet as arranged, Bill finds Martin with his throat slashed. He goes back with the police, and the body is gone. Martin is at school the next day and is perfectly healthy. Bill confronts his family again, and this time they drug him with Dr. Cleveland's help. Milo follows as Bill is taken to a hospital. Bill wakes up, hears what he thinks is David calling out, pulls down a curtain and finds nothing behind it. Milo and Clarissa attempt to warn him, but Bill drives home anyway, which is where the party is.
The formal party gets informal
Back at the house, Bill walks into a large formal party. Dr. Cleveland explains that Bill's family and their friends, who all belong to the social elite, are a different species from him, and that Bill was adopted and is not part of their bloodline. To show him, they bring in David, still alive, as a sacrifice. This is the scene people dread most, and it comes near the end. The guests undress down to their underwear and begin shunting, which means their bodies distort and merge into a shapeless mass of flesh. The mass absorbs David and kills him, with the guests feeding on him as it happens. The same fate is planned for Bill, but he gets away and runs through the house, and comes across his parents and sister doing the same thing.
The ending, explained
The cult members prepare Bill for the shunt by making him fight Ted, who beats him repeatedly while Clarissa begs him to stop. When Bill is too hurt to fight, Ted prepares to feed on him. Bill reaches inside Ted's body mid-shunt and pulls him inside out, which kills Ted. Milo and Clarissa help Bill escape. Clarissa belongs to the same species as the party guests, but she has fallen for Bill and turned on them. The three of them run out of the house while the party continues behind them. David is dead, Martin is fine, and Bill's family and their friends are still shunting.
