What actually happens
A body under the floor and a chicken on the menu
In 1939, Stan Carlisle shoves his dead father's body beneath the floor of a shabby house and sets the place on fire. That evening he wanders into a traveling carnival. The first act he sees is a geek show, where a deranged man eats a live chicken. This is the scene people brace for, and it comes right away, so it is over before the story gets going. Stan runs into the strongman and is offered a night of work. Clem, the carnival owner, convinces him to stay on, and Stan starts working with Madame Zeena, the carnival's clairvoyant, and her alcoholic husband Pete.
Reading this instead of watching it is the correct decision. Scaredy Cat makes that decision automatic, for free.
Learning to read minds for a living
Stan courts Molly, a performer, and asks her to leave with him. She says no. Zeena and Pete teach him their code language and cold reading techniques, and they warn him never to pretend to talk to the dead. Stan also finds out how Clem keeps his geeks: he hires alcoholics in trouble and holds onto them with opium in their drinks. Pete asks Stan for a drink one night, and by the next day Pete is dead. Police raid the carnival after hearing about the geek show, and Stan uses his reading skills to talk the sheriff into going easy. Soon afterward, Molly agrees to leave with him.
Buffalo has money, and so does everyone's secret
Stan's psychic act now plays to wealthy people in Buffalo, two years on, with Molly as his assistant, though he demands perfection from her and their relationship is strained. During a show, a psychologist named Dr. Lilith Ritter tries to expose them, and Stan humiliates her with a cold reading, then reads the man sitting next to her, Judge Kimball. The judge wants Stan to put him and his wife in touch with their dead son, and Stan says yes over Molly's objections. Ritter sells Stan information on Kimball in exchange for a therapy session. Zeena warns him off the reading, but Stan does it anyway and is paid well. He then steals files from Ritter to prepare for the industrialist Ezra Grindle, her former patient, and starts an affair with her.
Grindle wants to see Dorrie
Stan holds regular, expensive sessions with Grindle, who keeps pressing him to make the spirit of a young woman named Dorrie appear. Stan decides Molly will pose as Dorrie, and she agrees to do it only if she can leave him afterward. On the day of the plan, Kimball's wife kills her husband and herself in order to be with their son, inspired by Stan's earlier reading. That evening Grindle confesses that he hurt other women after Dorrie. Molly makes her appearance, but Grindle hugs her and sees through the disguise. He hits her, and Stan beats him to death. Molly leaves. Stan goes to Ritter's office for his savings and finds she has kept almost all of it, having manipulated him from the start. He attacks her and has to run when security arrives. A flashback shows that he killed his bedridden father by exposing him to the cold before setting the house on fire.
The ending, explained
Months later, Stan is homeless and drinking. He sees newspaper ads for Zeena and finds a new carnival, but his old one has gone out of business. He tries to sell the new owner on his mentalist act, and the owner turns him down because of how he looks and because the act is out of fashion. Instead the owner hands him a drink and a temporary job as a geek, in almost the words Clem used on the men at Stan's first carnival. Stan recognizes the trap. He accepts the job anyway, says he was born for it, and breaks down laughing. Molly is gone, and Ritter has his money.
The post-credits ruling
