What actually happens
An archangel walks into a diner
The Archangel Michael lands in Los Angeles and cuts off his own wings. He loots a weapons warehouse, takes a police car from a possessed officer and heads for the Paradise Falls Diner near the Mojave Desert. Kyle, a single father on his way to Los Angeles, stops there. He meets the owner, Bob Hanson, and Bob's son Jeep, the cook Percy, a pregnant waitress named Charlie, a married couple called Howard and Sandra Anderson and their rebellious teenage daughter Audrey. The television, radio and phone stop working. An elderly customer named Gladys then turns hostile and bites a chunk out of Howard's neck, and Kyle shoots her. A huge swarm of flies surrounds the diner, which cuts everyone off and stops them driving Howard to the hospital.

God has lost patience with a roadside diner
Michael walks in and hands out weapons while the sky goes black. Hundreds of cars pull up carrying possessed people, who attack the diner. Michael leads the defense, though the possessed drag Howard off. Afterward Michael tells them that God has lost faith in humans and has sent his angels to wipe out the human race. Charlie's baby has to live, because it is destined to be humanity's savior. Michael was ordered to kill the baby and refused. He still has faith in people, and he thinks God's mercy will win out over His anger in the end.
The cross behind the diner, and a second night
The scene people dread most comes the next morning. Sandra finds Howard hanging on an upside-down cross behind the diner, covered in huge boils. She tries to free him, and he explodes into acid. Percy dies shielding her from the blast, and Sandra goes insane and has to be restrained. A radio transmission tells the survivors that other groups are holding out, and there is a refuge nearby, but Michael warns them they would be too exposed on the road. After dark, the possessed attack in a second wave. Kyle walks into a trap and dies, and Charlie goes into labor. Michael and Audrey help with the delivery while trumpets announce the approach of the Archangel Gabriel. Sandra panics, breaks free and tries to hand the baby to the possessed, so Michael shoots her. Gabriel walks in and fatally wounds Bob. Michael urges everyone to get out, and gives Jeep two instructions: find the prophets, and make sense of the instructions.
Bob lights the diner
The possessed crowds cannot get anywhere near the baby. Jeep, Audrey and Charlie carry it to Michael's police car. Meanwhile Gabriel and Michael fight evenly until Gabriel drives a blade through Michael's chest. Michael dies, and his body disappears. Bob, who is dying, sets off the diner's gas main with his lighter, so that the diner goes up in flames. The blast takes out Bob and the remaining possessed, and the diner goes with them.
The ending, explained
Jeep finds that his body is covered in the same tattoos Michael had, and decides they are his instructions. Gabriel shows up, and in the scuffle Audrey is killed. He corners Jeep, Charlie and the baby in the mountains and is moments from finishing them when Michael arrives from Heaven, healed and made an Archangel again. Michael tells Gabriel that Gabriel did what God asked, while Michael did what God needed, which was another chance for humanity. He disarms Gabriel and explains that the whole thing was a test of the angels, who had become blind in their loyalty. Gabriel keeps obeying blindly, so he has failed. Ashamed, Gabriel leaves. Michael tells Jeep that the real protector of the child is Jeep himself, and when Jeep asks if they will see him again, Michael tells him to have faith and flies off. Charlie and Jeep climb to the mountaintop and spot a small town below them. Later they drive off with the baby in a vehicle full of weapons.
