What actually happens
A vacation with a very short checklist
Seven-year-old Wen is on vacation with her parents, Eric and Andrew, at a remote cabin in rural Pennsylvania. A stranger named Leonard comes up to her and says he needs her and her parents to help save the world. He and three others break into the cabin carrying homemade weapons and tie up Eric and Andrew. Eric gets a concussion in the struggle. Leonard, Sabrina, Adriane and Redmond say they don't want to hurt anyone. Over the past week, visions led them to this family. They have seen an apocalypse: rising oceans, a pandemic, and the sky falling. It can only be stopped if the family sacrifices one of its members. If the family refuses, they will be the last humans alive.
Reading this instead of watching it is the correct decision. Scaredy Cat makes that decision automatic, for free.
Redmond goes first
The family refuses, so the intruders sacrifice Redmond. This is the scene to brace for, and it comes early: they strike him with their weapons until he dies. As it happens, Andrew sees a figure of light. Then the TV shows enormous tsunamis. Andrew decides Redmond is really Rory O'Bannon, a man who assaulted him in a bar years earlier, and assumes Rory came looking for payback. The other three intruders are racked with guilt, but they insist Redmond's death has started the first judgment of humanity.
The apocalypse arrives in installments
The next day the TV reports a deadly new flu spreading across the world, and the intruders sacrifice Adriane. Wen has given Andrew a knife, which he uses to cut himself free. He fetches his handgun from the car and fires at Sabrina, who flees. Later, while Andrew holds Leonard at gunpoint, Sabrina charges in and Andrew shoots her. Leonard cuts off her head. Andrew finds Redmond's wallet, which proves to Leonard that Redmond was Rory. In the bathroom he confronts Leonard, who overpowers him and takes the gun. A news broadcast then reveals that hundreds of planes have crashed around the world.
The last volunteer
Leonard tells the family their time is almost up and that after he dies they will have only minutes to decide. He then slits his own throat. Lightning starts fires, and more planes fall out of the sky. Eric is now convinced the intruders were right and calls them the Four Horsemen. He does not want Wen to grow up in a ruined world, so he volunteers to be the sacrifice. He sees an older Andrew and a grown-up Wen doing well, and decides the family was chosen for a reason. Andrew reluctantly pulls the trigger. Andrew and Wen then find the intruders' truck in the woods, where they find proof that everything the strangers said was true. They drive away and stop at a crowded diner, where the news confirms that the disasters have stopped.
The ending, explained
Eric volunteers, and Andrew reluctantly shoots him. The disasters stop: the news says so at a diner, so the intruders were right. Andrew and Wen find the intruders' truck in the woods, and its contents confirm everything they said. Redmond, Adriane, Sabrina and Leonard are all dead, and so is Eric. Andrew and Wen drive away, the only survivors of the family, and the world goes on.
