DOG
Dog: fine
fine, though it spends the movie being a problem.
Ruling: It's a whole movie on one bed, and one scene in it is genuinely hard to watch.
Gerald's Game runs 104 minutes, and most of it takes place in one bedroom at a lake house in Alabama. Jessie is handcuffed to the bed, her husband has stopped being helpful, and the only visitor is a stray dog with an appetite.
The premise, briefly
When a bedroom game with her husband goes wrong at a remote lake house, Jessie is left handcuffed to the bed with nobody coming and a stray dog wandering in.

π±CUT TO THE CHASE
How it ends
Jessie frees herself, drives away, crashes and is rescued by neighbors. Months later she starts a foundation for abuse victims with her husband's life insurance, then watches the man who haunted the lake house get arraigned and tells him he is much smaller than she remembered.
The scene you're dreading
Jessie's escape from the handcuffs, late in the movie. She breaks a water glass, cuts her wrist and strips the skin off her hand to slip it out of the cuff. It is the most graphic scene in the movie.
The dog
The dog is fine. It wanders in, eats from Gerald's body and gets kicked when it goes after Jessie, but it is not seriously hurt.
Gerald's Game is a slow, claustrophobic ordeal with one very hard scene, and Jessie ends up with a clear win once you know how it goes.

What actually happens
Raw Kobe steak for the dog, handcuffs for Jessie
Jessie and Gerald Burlingame drive out to an isolated lake house in Fairhope, Alabama, hoping a romantic getaway will fix their marriage. Gerald takes a Viagra on arrival. Jessie feeds a stray dog some raw Kobe steak, and Gerald walks her into the bedroom, leaving the front door open behind them. She puts on a new slip, and he cuffs her wrists to the bedposts to act out a rape fantasy. Jessie objects and demands he stop, and the two of them fight. Then Gerald has a heart attack and dies, and Jessie is left alone in the house with her hands locked to the bed.
Two versions of Jessie and a husband who keeps talking
Hours pass, and the dog comes in through the open door and starts eating Gerald. Jessie, dehydrated and exhausted, starts hallucinating. One version of Gerald mocks her about their marriage and his erectile dysfunction. A second version of Jessie shows up, far more confident than the real one, and says out loud the things she never admitted. The hallucinations remind her that Gerald left a glass of water on a shelf above the bed, and she manages to reach it. At night a deformed figure carrying a bag of bones and trinkets appears in the bedroom. Hallucination Gerald says it is Death, but a bloody footprint and the way the dog reacts leave her unsure. When Gerald calls her "Mouse," she remembers a childhood eclipse, when her father sexually abused her and then talked her into acting as if it had never happened.
Water glass, repurposed
Jessie realizes she has repeated that pattern of silence in her marriage. She dreams the figure is licking her foot, then wakes up and finds the hungry dog doing it, and Gerald points out the dog will eventually try to eat her too. This is the scene people dread, and it happens late in the movie: Jessie breaks the water glass, cuts her wrist, and uses her own blood to grease the cuff while she peels the skin off her hand to pull it free. The scene ends once her hand is out and she reaches the key. She gets the handcuff key, unlocks her other wrist, bandages herself and passes out. She wakes in the dark next to Gerald's mutilated body.
The Moonlight Man makes the news
Jessie meets the figure face to face and gives him her wedding ring to add to his bag of trinkets. She drives off, hallucinates the eclipse and finds him in the back seat whispering "Mouse," and she crashes the car. Neighbors rescue her. Six months later she writes to her twelve-year-old self in a letter and uses Gerald's life insurance to fund a foundation for abuse survivors. She still sees the figure at night, and she is bothered that police never found her ring at the lake house. The news explains who he really is: a grave robber and serial killer named Raymond Andrew Joubert, who has just been caught. He took trophies from Gerald's body and left Jessie alone.
The ending, explained
Jessie goes to court on the day Joubert is arraigned. He breaks out of his handcuffs and taunts her, telling her she is not real and only made of moonlight. In him Jessie sees both Gerald and her father. She answers that he is much smaller than she remembers, and then she walks out of the courtroom, finished with all of them. Gerald is dead, Jessie lives and has built a foundation for other victims, and Joubert is in custody.
The post-credits ruling
