What actually happens
Grandpa's hobby was summoning demons
Joseph Price finds notes left by his late grandfather Benjamin in the Price family vacation house. They explain that a group called the Circle of the Wise Men once used the Necronomicon to release flesh-possessing demons, the Deadites, and then found the Kandarian Dagger, a weapon that can send them back to Hell. By accident, Joseph strips off the spells that kept the dagger hidden from the Deadites. Some time afterwards, Joseph's brother Will fights with his wife Alice and drives off drunk. On a country road, a possessed woman named Jessica steps in front of his car and he crashes. Will burns to death while Jessica, who has lost her head, reads out a Necronomicon passage that makes him a Deadite.
Reading this instead of watching it is the correct decision. Scaredy Cat makes that decision automatic, for free.
A family dinner that goes wrong
The family gathers for Will's cremation: Alice, Joseph, Joseph's girlfriend Thya, Susan and Edgar (Joseph's parents), and Polly, his grandmother, who has dementia. Afterwards Edgar visits Will's coffin alone, and Deadite Will breaks out, murders the crematorium attendant and sets Edgar's arm alight. Back at the house, Edgar slowly becomes possessed. Over dinner he accuses Alice of causing Will's death, then stabs the family dog Max with a fork. This is the scene to brace for, and it comes early. Joseph and Thya drive Edgar toward a hospital, but he fully turns into a Deadite and wrecks the car. Joseph abandons Thya and runs, and Edgar kills her.
Please do not let Grandma out of the cellar
Max, resurrected, attacks Alice before she finds Joseph at the house. Thya, now a Deadite, shows up and attacks the family, and they lock her in the cellar. Outside, Edgar shoots himself in the head over and over and does not die. While Alice, Joseph and Susan try to work out what is happening, Thya tricks Polly into opening the cellar and infects her, and Joseph beats Thya to death. The chaos brings back Alice's memories of Will's physical abuse. When she asks questions, Joseph tells her about Benjamin's research. Polly turns into a Deadite and persuades Susan to let Edgar in with a promise that the whole family, Will included, can be together again. Edgar and Susan kiss, which infects her, and the couple offer to spare the family if Joseph hands over the dagger. Joseph refuses, so Edgar mortally wounds him and goes after Susan.
Grandma takes the stairlift the wrong way
Polly ambushes Alice upstairs and talks Susan into helping, but Alice overpowers Polly and straps her to her stairlift, which hauls her downstairs. Alice and Susan lock themselves in a bathroom, where Alice restrains Susan for taking Polly's side. They argue: Susan says Alice destroyed the family, and Alice says Susan ignored Will's abuse to protect the picture of a perfect family. Susan then becomes a Deadite and attacks, and Alice escapes to the attic, where she finds the dagger. Deadite Joseph follows, and she uses it to end his possession. Alice climbs onto the roof, returns through the chimney, beheads Susan with a rotary saw, badly wounds Edgar and sets the house on fire. She also kills Max with the dagger. She collapses outside and hears Will's voice, and when she looks up he is standing in front of the burning house in his charred Deadite form.
The ending, explained
Alice runs to a construction site nearby. Will cripples her leg there and pins her in a pit that is filling with boiling tar. She fights back with a jackhammer and finally stabs him with the dagger. She then sees a vision of Will as a human, telling her he loves her. She answers through tears that this is not enough and crushes his Deadite head with her hands. Wounded, she drags herself to the road, where the police and paramedics turn up. When they ask who hurt her, she says her ex-husband.
The post-credits ruling
There are two post-credits scenes. In the first, Polly has escaped after cutting off her own leg, and she attacks a motorist who happens to be passing. In the second, Ellie Bixler returns as a Deadite at the crematorium where her unclaimed ashes are kept, and she kills the manager's daughter.
