What actually happens
Dracula waits politely for an invitation
Jonathan Harker goes to Count Dracula's castle in Transylvania, where he is supposed to help with a house purchase in England. While Harker stays, Dracula feeds on him and grows youthful, and Harker gets weaker. Harker searches the castle and finds undead people, all bitten by Dracula, and some of them still seem human. Dracula calls them his brides. Dracula then kills Harker, who wakes up and throws himself into a river. Some time later Harker is pulled out of the sea and taken to a convent with his memory damaged. Sister Agatha Van Helsing questions him while his fiancée Mina looks on. After he almost attacks Mina, Harker tries to stab himself with a stake. Dracula turns up at the convent but can't get in without an invitation. He talks to Harker through an open window and points out that the undead can't end themselves, then offers to finish the job if Harker lets him in. Harker agrees. That is the scene people dread: Dracula walks in, kills every nun except Van Helsing and Mina, and corners the two in the basement. It happens at the end of the first episode, and the episode stops right there.
In episode 2 Dracula is a passenger on the Demeter, a ship that a mysterious figure named Balaur has booked for the trip to England. Everyone aboard has some connection to Balaur, and the cargo includes boxes of soil from Transylvania. Dracula starts killing passengers and crew, and each time he picks up their memories and habits. It turns out Dracula is Balaur, and he chose every passenger to prepare himself for English society. The survivors search for the killer and find Agatha Van Helsing in a cabin, starved, where Dracula has been draining her slowly for the whole voyage. He tries to pin the killings on her, but she convinces the others that he is a vampire. They set him on fire and he jumps overboard. When the ship nears Whitby, he reappears. Agatha keeps him busy while the captain blows up the ship with gunpowder to stop him reaching land. Dracula shuts himself into a coffin full of his own soil as the ship goes down.
Dracula gets a lawyer
Dracula climbs out of the coffin onto a beach at Whitby, where Dr. Zoe Van Helsing tells him 123 years have gone by. He tries to feed on her, and her blood makes him vomit. She locks him in a laboratory to study him and takes samples of his blood. He calls a lawyer, who threatens to expose the lab's illegal work, so they let him go. Zoe drinks his blood and starts to see Sister Agatha's memories. Dracula becomes infatuated with Lucy Westenra, a young socialite who isn't afraid of him, and decides to turn her into his bride. Zoe, who is dying of cancer, starts to merge with Agatha's personality and goes to Dracula's home in London. Lucy, now undead, shows up there too and is horrified by what she has turned into. At her own request she is killed. Zoe then exposes Dracula to sunlight, and it has no effect on him.
The ending, explained
Zoe tells Dracula the truth about himself: he fears death above all, and he is deeply ashamed of that. He taught himself to believe the old legends because they gave him a way to hide from a society he felt he didn't deserve. Zoe dies, and afterward Dracula drinks blood that has been poisoned. The two of them share an epiphany in the sunlight, which has no effect on him. Lucy was killed earlier at her own request.
