After the family's ordeal at the Overlook Hotel, Danny Torrance is followed around by its ghosts, who want his "shine". When he is 8 and a ghost lady turns up in his bathroom, Dick Hallorann teaches him to trap such ghosts in mental lockboxes. By 2011 Dan has become an alcoholic, drinking to dull his abilities. He moves to New Hampshire and gets sober through Alcoholics Anonymous. He works as a hospice orderly and uses the shine to ease dying patients, and the patients start calling him Doctor Sleep. Abra Stone, a girl whose shine is stronger than his, reaches out to him telepathically, and the two become friends.

A snack bar for psychic vampires
This is the scene to brace for, and it comes early. The True Knot is a cult of psychic vampires that has been around a long time, and Rose the Hat runs it. They live on steam, a psychic essence released when someone with the shine is tortured and killed. By 2019 there are fewer people to feed on, and the group is starving. They recruit a teenage girl named Andi, who can influence people with suggestion, and then they kill a young baseball player in a gruesome way. Abra feels it from far away and is traumatized, and she alerts Dan. Rose senses Abra's clairvoyance, becomes interested, and later slips into Abra's dream, but Abra traps her there and searches Rose's memories to learn about the cult. Rose decides Abra's powers could feed the group for years, so she sends the True Knot after her.
Dan assembles a very small militia
Abra works out where the crime took place and goes to meet Dan in New Hampshire to give him the location and ask him to help stop the True Knot. Dan asks Billy, a friend, and Dave, Abra's father, to join him. They set an ambush and most of the cult dies in it. Andi kills Billy before she dies, and Rose's partner Crow Daddy kills Dave and takes Abra with him. Dan possesses Abra and makes Crow Daddy's car crash, which kills him. The people on Abra's side are now down to Dan and Abra, and Rose is still out there.
Back to the hotel nobody wanted to visit
Dan knows Rose is coming, so he takes Abra to the Overlook, now empty, which is as dangerous for Rose as it is for them. He sets the hotel's boiler to overload, runs into an apparition of his father and turns down an offer to drink. Rose arrives and gets the better of Dan, but Dan opens his lockboxes and lets the Overlook's ghosts out. The ghosts go for Rose's power and devour her, and then they take over Dan, hoping he will kill Abra so that they can feed on her steam. He gets as far as the boiler room, and there he takes control of himself again before the hotel can make him switch the overload off.
The ending, explained
As fire spreads through the Overlook, Dan has a vision of himself as a boy, held and comforted by his mother Wendy. Abra gets out while the hotel burns down, and Dan does not. Sometime later Abra hears Dan's spirit, who comforts her and tells her to shine on. She tells her mother that both Dan and Dave are doing okay, then confronts an Overlook ghost and locks it in a psychic lockbox of her own. Rose, Crow Daddy, Andi, Billy and Dave are all dead, along with most of the True Knot. The ending is soft, though not wholly happy.
