What actually happens
A serial killer with a midlife crisis
Aaron is a prolific serial killer who takes his name from an earlier victim, and his fortieth birthday is coming up. He has decided that killing no longer satisfies him. His latest ad for a videographer brings Sara to his remote cabin. Sara hosts a web series about odd Craigslist clients and it is not doing well. Aaron changes his usual approach and tells her up front that he is a serial killer. He says she can live for the next twenty-four hours if she films a documentary about his life. Sara does not believe him, but she agrees to film him anyway, hoping the footage will give her web series the audience it lacks.
Over the day, Aaron keeps trying to frighten Sara, and she keeps going along with his eccentric behavior. Eventually she tells him she does not think he is really a killer. Aaron answers that he plans to end the documentary by making her kill him. He then stages a suicide attempt, which horrifies her. As she gets ready to leave, he talks her into staying. Then Aaron confesses, in conversation, that he has never kissed anybody and is a virgin. Sara is surprised by this, offers to kiss him, and he accepts.
The grave in the woods
Aaron takes Sara into the woods and gives her the heart-shaped locket he gave his victim in the previous film. Then he shows her an open grave he has dug. This is the scene people dread, and it comes near the end. He stabs himself in the stomach, hands her the knife and urges her to stab herself so their film can finish like Romeo and Juliet. Sara tries to run. Aaron stabs her and hauls her over to the hole. Sara does not die there, which takes some of the sting out of watching it. Aaron walks up to the camera to deliver a closing monologue.
The ending, explained
While Aaron gives his closing monologue to the camera, Sara climbs out of the grave still alive and swings a shovel into the back of his skull. She runs away. Later, an unknown person films Sara in public while she whistles a tune from Aaron's videos. When she notices the camera, the picture cuts away abruptly, and the person filming is never identified. Sara is alive at the end.
The post-credits ruling
There is no post-credits scene. You can leave when the credits start.
