What actually happens
Evacuation orders are for other people
Haley Keller, a University of Florida swimmer, gets a call from her sister Beth telling her to leave the state before a Category 5 hurricane arrives. She is more worried about her father Dave, who she doesn't get along with, so she goes to his condo. It is empty apart from the family dog, Sugar. State trooper Wayne, who used to date Beth, tells her to evacuate, which she does not do. Haley takes Sugar and heads for the old family house in Coral Lake, a place that could flood, instead of evacuating.
The house is empty, so Haley goes into the crawl space and finds Dave badly mauled but alive. She tries to drag him out and gets stopped by a large American alligator. They retreat to a corner the animal can't reach, and Haley drops her phone. As the house floods, she tries to get the phone back and meets a second alligator, which crushes the phone and hurts her leg. She gets back to the safe spot. Through holes in the wall she can see three looters at a gas station nearby. She gets one of them to notice her, and all three are then attacked and eaten by alligators in the rising water.
Two cops, one storm drain
Wayne and his partner Pete come to the old house looking for Haley and Dave. Wayne goes inside, and the alligators ambush Pete and tear him apart. Wayne finds the crawl space, and Haley and Dave shout a warning, but he gets pulled in and eaten as well. Haley decides to swim to a storm drain as a last attempt to get out, and finds the alligators have built a nest there and laid eggs. One of them attacks her, and she kills it with Wayne's gun.
The levees give out
The water is nearly up to the ceiling of the crawl space, so Haley swims out through the storm drain into the flooded street, goes into the house, and breaks a hole in the living room floor with a crowbar to get Dave out. They bring Sugar and head for a boat outside while the eye of the hurricane passes over. Then the nearby levees break, and the water crashes into the house and splits them up. Near the end, as Dave and Sugar go up the stairs, an alligator bites off Dave's right forearm. This is the scene people dread most, and Dave survives it. Meanwhile Haley makes her way around the kitchen to a floating police radio and calls for rescue, traps one alligator in a shower stall, and fights off another that tries to kill her with a death roll.
The ending, explained
Haley stabs the alligator that has been rolling her in the eye with a flare, and she, Dave and Sugar reunite on the roof. They get through one more close call with another alligator, then rest, just as a rescue helicopter arrives in answer to Haley's radio call. She lights a flare to flag it down. Haley and Dave are rescued with Sugar, and Haley looks at her father in relief while he watches her with pride. Wayne and Pete are dead, and Dave has lost his right forearm.
